The inner Critic
All of you have an internal critic, regularly looking to feed your mind with negativity. Your internal critic thrives on being overly negative and cynical of everything that you do.
Common examples of the inner critic at work include attacks on your intelligence, your physical attractiveness, and even your ability to form long lasting relationships.
Some of you have a louder and a more convincing inner critic compared with others, while some individuals are able to quieten their inner critic with ease.
Either way you all have one.
Strangely enough the function of the inner critic is to protect you from danger.
Negative comments usually have an inhibiting impact on your behaviour by restricting your choices.
By having an inner voice that deters you from certain actions and behaviours, it's controlling influence is likely to help keep you safe and consequently protect you from danger.
The role of the internal critic is very similar that of a parent protecting a child. By being overly critical the parent can correct the child's behaviour so that others in society will not reject or shun the infant.
Although the inner critic's intentions are positive, unfortunately they can grow out of all proportions to the point where the voice becomes damaging instead of protective.
It can become so uncontrollable that even natural behaviours become inhibited.
An effective way to control the pathological effects of the inner critic is to question the rationality of the statements it makes.
